Five Toronto-area men face charges after two Guelph police cruisers were rammed during a shoplifting investigation Friday.

Officers were called approximately 5 p.m. to a business in the area of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street. Staff reported men had fled the store with stolen property.

Officers attempted to stop the involved BMW SUV, however the driver intentionally struck one cruiser, then reversed into a second one. An uninvolved private vehicle in the parking lot was also struck. All vehicles sustained moderate damage however there were no injuries reported. Investigation revealed the BMW and licence plates attached had been reported stolen in separate incidents from other regions.

Five men from the Toronto area face various charges including dangerous operation, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000, theft under $5,000 and breaching court orders. Two have been released with August court dates while three have been held to appear in a Guelph bail court Monday.
