An Oakville man faces several charges following a short low-speed pursuit in Downtown Guelph Thursday morning.

Just after 1 a.m., an officer patrolling downtown was alerted by the cruiser’s automated licence plate reader of a vehicle registered to a male wanted in another jurisdiction for assault and other charges. A short time later a male was seen getting into the vehicle and driving away.

The officer followed and waited for a safe place to initiate a traffic stop, however when he activated his emergency lighting the vehicle did not stop. The driver ran a red light and stop sign before abruptly stopping and the driver fled on foot. He was arrested following a lengthy foot pursuit.

The man was showing signs of impairment. After failing a roadside test he was transported to the police station where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. Investigation revealed the man was on a bail condition not to have contact with a female who was a passenger in the vehicle.

A 42-year-old Oakville man is charged with impaired driving, flight from police, dangerous driving, breaching a release order and several Highway Traffic Act offences. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
