Four impaired arrests on the weekend

Four people were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend, including one who collided with a business Sunday night.

On Saturday, approximately 2:40 p.m., Guelph police received a report of a car being driven erratically in the area of Victoria Road South and York Road. Officers checked the area and located the car in a commercial parking lot. The owner was located and while speaking to officers showed signs of impairment and had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

The male registered a fail on an approved roadside screening device and was taken to the police station, where further testing revealed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 60-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation – blood alcohol concentration. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Nov. 2.

Approximately three hours after that call, at 5:35 p.m. Saturday, police received information about a possibly intoxicated male leaving a residence in the area of Eramosa Road and Meyer Drive. While checking the area, officers spotted the involved vehicle returning to the address and parking.

Officers spoke to the driver, who was unsteady on his feet and had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. The male was taken to the police station where he repeatedly refused to provide a breath sample. A 59-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and refusing to provide a breath sample. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Oct. 29.

On Sunday morning, approximately 2:30 a.m., police received reports of a vehicle being driven erratically in the parking lot of a business on Clair Road West. Officers arrived and found a male sitting in a car which had a damaged rim and flat tire.

When the male exited the car he stumbled and fell and was observed to be wearing one running shoe and one sandal. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where he vomited and then fell asleep while waiting to speak to a duty counsel lawyer. Eventually the male provided breath samples which confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 26-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Oct. 29.

Finally, approximately 11 p.m. Sunday police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West where it was reported a male had struck the building while attempting to park his pickup truck. Officers arrived a short time later and spoke to the driver, who had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. After registering a fail on a roadside screening device the male was taken to the police station where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 33-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Dec. 7.
