Four people were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend, including one man charged following a Saturday morning collision which injured another driver.

Just after 11 a.m. Saturday, emergency services were called for a two-vehicle collision at Kathleen Street and Division Street. Investigation revealed a vehicle had run a stop sign and collided with another vehicle, causing significant damage to both.

One of the drivers was asked to provide a breath sample into a roadside screening device, registering a fail. Further testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to hospital for treatment of a back injury.

While officers were investigating that incident, police were called by staff of a west end business reporting an intoxicated customer had just driven away. Staff provided the licence plate, which led officers to an address nearby where they observed the car pulling into the driveway.

Police observed signs of impairment and placed the man under arrest. Further testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Approximately 2:25 a.m. Sunday, a Guelph officer on patrol noticed a vehicle driving erratically on Elmira Road North near Willow Road and conducted a traffic stop. The driver had a strong smell of alcoholic beverage on his breath and was arrested for further testing, which confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Sunday evening, approximately 10:20 p.m., police were called about a hit and run which had just occurred on Hadati Road. Officers located a damaged vehicle in a nearby parking lot and witnesses said three males had fled on foot. Officers checked the area and located the males, one of whom admitted he had been driving.

The male had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and was transported to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 25-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at a collision.

The total damage was estimated at $15,000.
