A Guelph male is facing charges after being caught on video getting into a stolen SUV.

On Oct. 2, a Lexus SUV was reported stolen from a residence in the area of Riverview Drive and Waverley Drive. Investigation revealed the owner’s son-in-law had seen the vehicle outside a business in Fergus the same day, but at the time didn’t realize it had been stolen.

Guelph police investigators obtained surveillance video from the business and were able to identify the driver and passenger from previous interactions.

The Lexus was recovered October 3 after police were called about a suspicious male possibly using drugs in a parking lot in the area of Willow Road and Alma Street. A 27-year-old Cambridge male was located standing near the vehicle and was arrested on multiple charges. He was not charged in relation to the stolen vehicle, however the surveillance video obtained later confirmed he had been the driver. He remains in custody on other charges and will be charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and being an occupant in a stolen motor vehicle.

On Saturday evening the second male observed on video was located at an address on Woolwich Street and arrested. A 29-year-old Guelph male is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000 and being an occupant in a stolen motor vehicle. He will appear in a Guelph court January 28, 2022.
