Failing to wear a seatbelt led to drug and weapons charges for a Guelph male Tuesday afternoon.

Approximately 4:20 p.m., Guelph police stopped a taxi on Woolwich Street near London Road East after noticing the passengers were not wearing seatbelts.

The taxi driver did not wish to continue the trip and asked officers to remove the males from the cab. As they stepped out, officers noticed a camera bag which had been pushed under the front seat. The bag was searched and found to contain several baggies with suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine.

All three males were detained as police attempted to determine who owned the bag. During a search, one of the males was allegedly found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia including contaminated baggies, a scale and an apparent debt list. A pocket knife was also found hidden inside the bag.

A 46-year-old Guelph male is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and carrying a concealed weapon.

The other two passengers were released unconditionally.
