Guelph police officer punched in the face

Police say a man being arrested for allegedly shoplifting struck the officer in the jaw, resulting in an assault police charge

A Guelph man faces several charges after a police officer was punched in the face while attempting to arrest a shoplifter Friday night.

Police were called just after 9 p.m. to a business near Paisley Road and Elmira Road South where a male had entered after the store was closed. He stole product and fled out an emergency exit when police arrived.

The man was located hiding nearby. As an officer approached the man punched him in the jaw. The officer was not injured.

A 41-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault police, theft under $5,000, causing a disturbance and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
