Guelph police are reminding residents to be cautious when dealing with unknown parties, after a Guelph female lost $15,000 to a scam.

The victim contacted police Monday. She advised earlier in the day she received a message on her computer claiming to be from Microsoft technical support. She spoke to a male by telephone who advised her to purchase $15,000 in Apple gift cards to remedy the problem.

The victim purchased $5,000 in gift cards from each of three businesses and provided the PIN numbers to the male on the phone.

Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant and cautious whenever you are speaking with someone you don’t know, especially online or over the phone. Please also seek advice from a family member, co-worker, trusted friend or the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212 before following through on instructions received from a person that you don’t know.
