A Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving and other charges Monday after a Guelph police officer was nearly struck during a traffic stop.

Just after 10 p.m., an officer was standing on the road speaking to a driver on Speedvale Avenue East near Eramosa Road. A GMC Terrain passed close to the officer, who was using his flashlight to signal the driver to move over, police report.

The driver of the Terrain eventually pulled over when directed to do so, but a short time later drove away before speaking to the officer. He was followed and pulled over a second time.

He showed signs of impairment and provided several false names. The driver eventually provided a roadside breath sample which resulted in a fail. Further testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A search of the vehicle revealed three empty and one part-full cans of beer. Investigation revealed the male is unlicensed due to a previous impaired driving conviction.

A 60-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving, obstructing police, driving while prohibited, failing to slow down for a stopped emergency vehicle and failing to stop when directed to do so.
