A Guelph male was arrested for impaired driving Sunday evening after officers observed his vehicle being driven erratically.

Police were notified approximately 7:20 p.m. of a possible impaired driver on Victoria Road South near Arkell Road, and located the vehicle a short time later driving on York Road. Officers observed the vehicle swerving within and outside its lane while driving very slowly.

A traffic stop was initiated and officers immediately detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. The driver was unable to maintain eye contact with officers and struggled to follow simple commands.

He was arrested and taken to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 51-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Jan. 4.
