On June 2, 2018, members of the Guelph Police Service hosted their 8th annual Kids and Cops fishing event. A group of 22 young individuals from the Shelldale Centre were invited to attend a day of fishing organized by the members of the Guelph Police Service. The kids met at the Shelldale Centre early that morning and were bused to a private pond where they were provided all the equipment necessary to catch the “big one”. Fish, including large mouth bass, small mouth bass, rainbow trout and sunfish were caught by all. After a fun-filled day of fishing, the kids enjoyed a barbeque lunch before being bused back.

Experts have rated fishing as one of the best outdoor activities for children. It is one of the few activities where a youngster can outperform an adult. For example, a child has an excellent chance to catch a larger fish than an adult. This provides a legitimate sense of accomplishment and a logical source for sincere praise. These are two of the most essential elements contributing to a child’s feeling of self-confidence. Fishing is one of the very best ways for parents and other adults to establish productive and healthy relationships with children.

This is one of the many events hosted throughout the year by members of the Guelph Police Service to interact with members of the community. It affords an opportunity for members of the police service to reaffirm their commitment of enhancing the quality of life while contributing to the positive growth and development of members of the community.

Members of the Guelph Police Service would like to thank the following supporters of the event:
    •    Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation
    •    Police Association of Ontario
    •    Eden House Care Facility
    •    Lord of the Fins Guide Service
    •    Pillers Fine Foods
