Police seized five guns, including a loaded .22-calibre machine gun, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from a west-end home on Monday night, after a man reported he had armed himself against possible intruders.

Officers responded to the area of Speedvale Avenue West and Imperial Road North at about 11 p.m. after a man reported what he believed to be armed suspects trying to get into his home, explains a Guelph Police Service news release. The man told a dispatcher he was holding a semi-automatic gun to defend himself.

Upon arrival, police determined there was no one else at the scene and contacted the man inside, who agreed to come out with his hands empty.

An ensuing investigation revealed a loaded machine gun under a bathroom sink as well as four other firearms and ammunition stored safely elsewhere in the home.

The 33-year-old man, who was taken to hospital for assessment, has a valid firearms licence, notes the release.

Police continue to investigate.
