Local business a victim of phone scam

CENTRE WELLINGTON - On March 19, 2018 at approximately 11 a.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police responded to a complaint regarding a scam involving Prepaid Visa cards.

The complainant advised he was a store manager of a local business. Officers learned that during the evening of March 18, 2018 a manager of the business took a phone call from a male who claimed to be from the company's IT Department. 

The male suspect advised the employee that there was a recall on Prepaid Visa Cards and asked the manager to immediately activate 16 Prepaid Visa Cards which the manager did. 

When the complainant learned what had happened he recognized the event as a scam and was able to cancel approximately half the Prepaid Cards. The others were already spent.
