A Guelph male faces impaired driving and drug charges after his erratic driving caught the eye of other motorists early Tuesday, report Guelph police.

Just before 4 a.m., witnesses called police to report a car swerving into oncoming lanes in the area of Speedvale Avenue East and Victoria Road North. Officers located the vehicle in the area of Grange Road and Starwood Drive and saw it pull into a private driveway.

The driver exited the vehicle and stumbled. He had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and was exhibiting signs of impairment. The male was arrested and taken to the police station to provide breath samples which confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A search of the male’s car subsequent to arrest revealed 12.2 grams of suspected cocaine divided into 13 individual baggies, a quantity of prescription tranquilizers and empty baggies.

A 23-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving, two counts of possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, driving while suspended and novice driver having alcohol in his system.

His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He was held in custody for a bail hearing Tuesday.
