A Guelph man was arrested early Thursday after a clerk at a downtown business was assaulted, Guelph police report.

Just before midnight Wednesday, police were called to a restaurant on Macdonell Street. A man who had earlier been removed from the business came back in and punched the clerk in the side of the face while his back was turned, police allege. The subject then went outside and used a sock filled with rocks to smash the front window, causing approximately $2,000 in damage.

Officers located a man nearby and arrested him. A 32-year-old man is charged with assault, mischief under $5,000 and being intoxicated in public.
