Man attacked after refusing to buy cigarettes, arrest made

A man was shoved to the ground and hit in the head several times Monday evening after squashing a request to buy cigarettes for someone outside a Downtown-area business.

According to a Guelph Police Service news release, a man repeatedly asked a female near the intersection of Gordon Street and Wellington Street East to buy him cigarettes, but a male bystander intervened and was attacked.

No injuries were reported.

Police found the suspect nearby and made an arrest.

A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and breaching probation.
