Roads around the Guelph Police Service building were closed Monday morning as officers investigate a suspicious package in the area.

A Guelph man, 55, has been arrested in connection with Monday's suspicious package left outside the Guelph police station.

Just after 8 a.m., an officer located the package and a note outside the main doors. After initial investigation could not determine the nature of the package, the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Explosives Disposal Unit was called to assist.

EDU officers utilized a remote-controlled robot to approach and detonate the package, which was found not to contain any explosive material. Roads in the area were closed for approximately four hours.

A review of surveillance video showed the package being dropped off just after 4 a.m. A man was later located downtown and arrested.

He is charged with mischief and is scheduled to appear in a Guelph court May 30.
