Man charged with arson following Saturday apartment fire

Several people were displaced by the fire, one person treated for smoke inhilation

A Guelph man faces an arson charge after a fire early Saturday morning which caused the evacuation of an apartment building on Woolwich Street in downtown Guelph.

Around 1:10 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department and police were notified of a fire at an apartment at the corner of Woolwich Street near Eramosa Road.

The fire was deemed to be suspicious in nature. Following an investigation with the assistance of the Office of the Fire Marshal, police arrested a 31-year-old Guelph man and have charged him with arson and two counts of breach of probation.

He was held in custody for a bail hearing Monday morning.

One person was treated for smoke inhilation and damage estimates are yet to be determined.
