A Guelph male faces several charges after two Guelph police officers were reportedly assaulted while investigating a disturbance early Saturday morning.

Shortly after 1 a.m. police were notified of a disturbance in an apartment unit on Paisley Road near Imperial Road South. A neighbour called police after hearing yelling and things being smashed.

When officers arrived they could hear a male screaming and things being broken inside. Eventually the male opened the door and swore at officers, who were able to see glass smashed all over the floor inside the unit and could hear someone crying. Officers attempted to enter the unit to check everyone’s wellbeing, but the male blocked the door and tried to close it on one officer’s arm.

The male was arrested for obstructing police, but as officers tried to handcuff him he struggled and repeatedly kicked one officer in the groin area. Officers used a conducted energy weapon to eventually get the male under control. While taking him outside he intentionally blew his nose toward one of the officers, striking him on the leg.

A 30-year-old Guelph male is charged with mischief, assaulting a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest, two counts of obstructing police and failing to comply with a release order. He was held in custody for a bail hearing Monday.
