A 27-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and dangerous driving after witnesses saw him crash, and then attack, his vehicle early Sunday.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. Guelph Police was advised of a single-vehicle collision on Edinburgh Road South just north of College Avenue West. Investigation revealed the driver was northbound on Edinburgh Road when he drifted across the centre line and mounted the curb on the west side of the road.

The motor vehicle drove over driveways and snowbanks before striking a hydro pole, destroying the vehicle.

Witnesses then saw the irate driver removing a large piece of wood from inside the vehicle and smashing the rear window with it.

Police arrived on scene a short time later and quickly determined the male was impaired by a controlled substance. He was arrested for impaired operation and dangerous driving. His driver’s license was immediately suspended for seven days and his vehicle impounded for 90 days.

He will appear in court May 7.
