Surveillance of a stolen vehicle on Friday evening resulted in nearly 20 charges for a Guelph man, including assault to resist arrest.

Officers were watching a vehicle in a parking lot near Speedvale Avenue West and Elmira Road North when they saw a male put a backpack inside it and walk away. That’s when an officer attempted to stop the man, who tried to flee on foot, explains a police news release.

During a subsequent struggle, three officers sustained minor injuries.

Upon the man’s arrest, police located keys to the vehicle as well as a spring-loaded knife, which was allegedly in the man’s pocket.

A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up pepper spray, several knives, small amounts of suspected fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine, as well as suspected stolen property including mail and identification.

A 39-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault to resist arrest; several property, drug and weapons charges; and six counts of breaching court orders.
