A Guelph man was arrested after another man was kicked in the back by a stranger while out for a morning walk, Guelph police report.

Approximately 9 a.m. Saturday a man in his 50s was walking near Eramosa Road and King Street when he saw a younger man walking the other way. As they passed, the younger man drove his shoulder into the victim, causing him to fall against a railing.

They exchanged a few words and continued on their way, but the suspect turned and ran at the victim, kicking him in the back and causing him to fall down. The victim sustained injuries including scrapes and soreness in his back and hips but declined medical attention.

A short time later, officers were called to a business in the area for a shoplifting report and identified the assault suspect based on descriptions provided by the victim and witnesses.

A 25-year-old is charged with assault and theft under $5,000.
