A 22-year-old Kitchener male registered a Warn on the approved screening device and was issued a three day driver’s licence suspension.

Guelph Police would like to remind drivers that they will continue to conduct random spot checks for persons driving under the influence of alcohol.  Registering breath samples over 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood will result in an immediate 90 day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension.  Convictions for Impaired Driving and Driving with Over 80 mgs will both result in a minimum of 12 month driving prohibition.

Single car collision

On Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016 at approximately 10 a.m., the Guelph Police went to a single vehicle collision at Downey Road and Ptarmigan Drive. It is alleged that a four door Volkswagon Jetta travelling south on Downey near Ptarmigan, left the roadway striking a hydro pole.

The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, a 30-year-old Guelph female, was extracted from the vehicle by the Guelph Fire Department. Guelph Wellington EMS transported her to Guelph General Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The road was partially closed for approximately two hours while emergency crews were on scene and Guelph hydro inspected damage to the pole.

Road conditions at the time of the collision were poor as a result of snow and slush. Police would like to remind the public of the importance of reducing their speed while driving in wintery conditions.

The same thing happened again at this same building overnight on the 10th, when another storage locker was broken into.

Motor vehicle collisions

Over the weekend police responded to 21 collisions, minor injuries were reported in five of them. Eight provincial offence tickets were issued and weather conditions were a contributing factor in the majority of the collisions.

We all have a part to play with the safety on our roads and it starts with recognizing that driving habits need to change with the season as well as being patient and respectful of other drivers.

Please do not drive over the posted limits and allow for more time to reach your destinations, give yourself a greater following distance with other cars to allow yourselves to stop safely and invest in winter-rated tires that have been shown to reduce stopping distances and provide more traction in winter conditions.
