Thefts of catalytic converters continues to be an issue in Guelph, with two reported stolen from vehicles at north-end residential properties on the weekend.

The recent rash of catalytic converter thefts have typically been at businesses, but these were at residential properties.

On Sunday afternoon, a resident of Woodlawn Road East near Victoria Road North called police to report the exhaust component had been cut off her motor vehicle sometime overnight. Then on Monday afternoon a resident of Woolwich Street near Speedvale Avenue East reported her vehicle’s catalytic converter had also been stolen sometime over the weekend.

Police services across North America have reported a surge in catalytic converter thefts in recent months, as values soar for the precious metals used in their construction. There have been more than 40 such thefts reported in Guelph since Christmas.

Anyone with information about catalytic converter thefts is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Phil Perrins of the Guelph Police Service General Investigations and Special Projects Unit at 519-824-1212, ext. 7336, email him at [email protected], leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
