Off-duty police officer makes arrest in grocery store

A Guelph male faces shoplifting charges after he was arrested Friday by another shopper at a south-end grocery store. The second shopper was an off-duty Guelph police constable.

At approximately 8:25 p.m. Friday, the off-duty officer was shopping at a business near Kortright Road West and Edinburgh Road South when he observed a male select a large quantity of meat and head for the exit. The officer stopped the male and arrested him.

On-duty officers arrived a short time later and took over the arrest. Almost $500 worth of product was recovered.

A 38-year-old Guelph male is charged with theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and breach of probation. He will appear in a Guelph court September 14.
