Police investigating Stone Road bank robbery (4 photos)

Police say the suspect, who is still on the loose, smashed a window to escape from the bank

A mid-day bank robber smashed a window and climbed out through the hole on Friday, say police.

The incident happened at the CIBC bank on Stone Road, east of Scottsdale Drive at about 12:45 p.m. No physical injuries have been reported.

Scott Tracey, Guelph Police Service spokesperson, said a white male in his 30s claimed to have a weapon and demanded money. He then smashed a rear-facing window and fled on foot.

The suspect was last seen heading east on Stone Road.

“I understand there were bystanders who attempted to follow him for some distance and then returned here to the bank to assist officers as they were arriving,” said Tracey.

An undisclosed quantity of cash was taken. The firearm was recovered at the scene.

A canine unit was called in to search the area, Tracey noted. Forensic investigators also responded to the bank, in addition to detectives and other officers.

At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing an olive green jacket with blue sleeves and black pants with a white or silver stripe down the side.

This is the third robbery at that CIBC location within the past year.
