Police lay multiple impaired driving arrests

Incidents occurred between July 30 and Aug. 1

On July 30, 2021, at 8:40 p.m., police began observing an adult male driving a motor vehicle in the area of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue East in the City of Guelph. During the period of observation, the male crossed the centre dividing line on multiple occasions and was unable to keep the vehicle on a straight course.

At 8:45pm, a traffic stop was initiated, police spoke with the male and he was subsequently arrested.

A 67-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:


  • Operation while impaired – Alcohol

  • Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on Aug. 27.

On July 31, at 2:20 a.m., the Guelph Police Service received a driving complaint regarding a motor vehicle entering the south end’s city limits on Gordon Street.

Police quickly located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop at 2:22 a.m. near the intersection of Goodwin Drive and Farley Drive. Police spoke with the adult female driver and she ultimately failed an Approved Screening Device roadside breath test. She was subsequently arrested.

Further investigation revealed that she was a Class G2 licenced driver.

A 31-year-old Guelph female has been charged with:


  • Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration

  • Novice driver – Blood alcohol concentration above zero

Her driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for seven days.

She will appear in court on Aug. 24.

On July 31, at 2:59 a.m., police observed a motor vehicle driving near the intersection of Wellington Street West and Edinburgh Road South. At one point, the vehicle swerved up onto the grassy shoulder, continued driving, and eventually turned back on to the roadway before stopping abruptly.

A traffic stop was initiated. Police spoke with the adult male driver and he ultimately failed an Approved Screening Device roadside breath test. He was subsequently arrested.

A 29-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:


  • Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on Aug. 27.

On Aug. 1, at 12:01 a.m., a concerned citizen reported to the Guelph Police Service that a motor vehicle had just collided with a telephone pole out front of their residence located near the intersection of Wellington Street West and Gordon Street, drove across their front yard and left the area. The collision caused minor damage to the telephone pole.

At 12:05 a.m., police located the significantly damaged vehicle in a nearby commercial parking lot. Police spoke with the adult male driver and he was subsequently arrested.

A 33-year-old Oakville male has been charged with:


  • Operation while impaired – Alcohol

  • Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration

  • Fail to remain

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on Aug. 27.

On Aug. 1, just before 3:23 a.m., police observed a motor vehicle driving near the intersection of Willow Road and Edinburgh Road North. At one point, the vehicle mounted a curb, kept driving for few seconds and then turned back onto the roadway.

A traffic stop was initiated. Police spoke with the adult male driver and he ultimately refused to comply with a demand to participate in a roadside test by providing a breath sample into an Approved Screening Device. The male then told police to arrest him and proceeded to do push ups in the middle of the roadway. During the subsequent arrest, a scuffle ensued as the male resisted arrest, not allowing police to place him in handcuffs. Ultimately officers were able to safely gain control of the male and he was arrested.

A 30-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:


  • Refusal to comply with demand

  • Resist arrest

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on Nov. 9.

On Aug. 1, at 9:57 p.m., a concerned citizen reported to the Guelph Police Service that a motor vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of Wellington Street West and Gordon Street.

At 10:01 p.m., police found the vehicle parked in a commercial parking lot located near the intersection of Waterloo Avenue and Silvercreek Parkway South, and stopped an adult male as he was exiting the vehicle. Police spoke with the male and he ultimately failed an Approved Screening Device roadside breath test. He was subsequently arrested.

A 31-yearold Guelph male has been charged with:


  • Operation while impaired – Alcohol

  • Operation while impaired – Blood alcohol concentration

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on Aug. 27.

As well during the 72 hour time period of this media release, police performed traffic stops on July 30 at 4:29 p.m. and July 31 at 11:31 p.m. that resulted in two separate three day driver’s licence suspensions due to each driver registering an Alert during an Approved Screening Device roadside breath test.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public that if you ever decide to consume alcohol or marihuana to please ensure that you consume them responsibly and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
