Police make five arrests for impaired driving during the weekend

Each driver had their licence suspended for 90 days and their vehicle impounded for a week

Guelph police laid five impaired driving charges during the weekend, including two following collisions.

“The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly,” states a news release. “Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.”

The first arrest was made at about 5 p.m. on Friday, after police responded to a collision in the area of Paisley Road and Alma Street North. 

No physical injuries were reported.

While speaking with one of the drivers, police report having detected an odour of alcohol on his breath and observed signs of impairment. The driver then registered a “fail” on a roadside breath/alcohol screening device and was taken to the station for more testing, which “confirmed” he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 33-year-old Cambridge male is charged with impaired driving.

At about 8:40 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a complaint of a vehicle being driven erratically in the area of Gordon Street and Stone Road West. When the vehicle was stopped, “officers immediately noted an odour of alcoholic beverage coming from the driver’s breath,” explains the news release.

The driver failed a roadside screening test and was taken to the police station for additional testing, which detected more than the legal limit of alcohol in the person’s system, explains the news release.

A 62-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving.

There were three more arrests made on Sunday.

Shortly after midnight, patrolling police observed a vehicle being driven erratically after leaving a licenced establishment on Silvercreek Parkway South.

The driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in their system.

A 49-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving.

About two hours later, at 2:35 a.m. while investigating a suspicious vehicle call in the area of Victoria Road North and Eastview Road, officers pulled over a vehicle and the driver reportedly admitted he had been drinking.

Subsequent testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system, the news release said.

A 30-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving.

Then, just before noon, police responded to a collision at the intersection of Edinburgh Road South and Wilsonview Avenue, where a motorist was reportedly stopped and waiting to make a turn when they were rear-ended.

No physical injuries were reported.

Police spoke with the other driver and noted an odour of alcoholic beverage. Testing at the police station confirmed they had more than the legal limit of alcohol in their system.

A 27-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving.

In each of the incidents, the accused person’s driver's licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for a week.
