Guelph police officers have been pulling in a lot of overtime in 2023.

According to a report heading to the Guelph Police Services Board Thursday, paid overtime spending is over budget by $344,000, as of the end of September.

“Banked and paid overtime hours are up year over year by 6,234 straight time hours,” the report says, attributing the overtime hours to training, the downtown supplemental staffing project, “several” ongoing investigations and events like protests, Project Safe Semester and Homecoming.

The report says overtime is expected to present challenges for the remainder of 2023 because of staffing vacancies and a “higher than normal level major crime investigations.”

Overall, the report says Guelph police’s operating budget spending is below its target for the first nine months of the year.
