Guelph Police are investigating an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon in the south end of the city.

Around 12:25 p.m., two suspects attempted to enter a store in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Stone Road West. Due to recently instituted security measures, as a result of other robberies throughout Ontario, the entryway was controlled by employees who refused to allow the suspects inside.

The suspects left in a vehicle which shortly thereafter was spotted by police in the north end of the city. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle for further investigation, the suspects fled on foot.

One of the suspects was apprehended following a short foot pursuit. During a search subsequent to arrest he was found to be in possession of a replica handgun.

The second suspect was not located. He is described as a male, 25 to 30 years old, wearing a black jacket and grey pants.

The vehicle was later determined to have been stolen out of Peel Region.

An 18 year old Mississauga male was charged with robbery with a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Const. Mark Medulun of the Guelph Police Service General Investigation and Special Projects Unit at 519-824-1212 ext. 7346, email him at [email protected], leave an anonymous tip for Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
