Guelph Police are warning the public after a 15-year-old guelph girl was reportedly scammed out of $600.

Police say that on Monday the girl received a phone call from an adult male posing as a police officer. He advised her that she owed money to multiple different people and that she also needed a new social insurance number. He instructed her to withdraw $600 from her bank account and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine at a business located near the intersection of Gordon Street and Wellington Street East.

The female followed the instructions, and then reported the incident to the Guelph Police Service later that afternoon after realizing it was likely a scam.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Constable Shannon Carroll at 519-824-1212 ext. 7357, email her at [email protected], leave an anonymous tip at CRIME STOPPERS 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind that public that no police officer will ever instruct you to deposit money into a Bitcoin machine. Please be very vigilant and cautious whenever you are speaking with someone you don’t know, especially over the phone. Please also seek advice from a family member, coworker, trusted friend or the Guelph Police Service before following through on instructions received from a person that you don’t know.
