Since Aug. 1, 2020, the Guelph Police Traffic Unit has been engaged in Operation Noise Pollution. This road safety initiative invited members of the public to call in and notify police of any potential noisy or modified vehicles that may be in violation of section 75 of the Highway Traffic Act.

During the course of this operation the Traffic Unit fielded a total of 23 civilian complaints. Police investigated these complaints to determine their validity. The investigations resulted in 16 vehicle inspections being completed. Of those 16 vehicles, seven were issued Provincial Offences Notices for having no or improper mufflers. One driver was given a verbal warning for having a defect within a proper exhaust system and eight vehicles passed the inspection. Of those eight, four vehicles were found to have had recent corrections made prior to their inspection date bringing these vehicles into compliance under the Highway Traffic Act. This was the ultimate goal of this initiative, motor vehicles on Guelph streets meeting the provincial requirements regarding proper muffler systems.

The Guelph Police Traffic Unit would like to that the community for their help in making this operation a success. Please drive with care.
