There were no criminal charges laid, but six motorists were temporarily taken off the road during RIDE spot checks Saturday night, report Guelph police.

RIDE checks were set up at two spots near the downtown core. Approximately 800 vehicles were stopped and 25 drivers asked to provide breath samples.

Four drivers were handed 72-hour licence suspensions and had their vehicles impounded for a similar time frame after registering warnings on the device, meaning their blood alcohol level was between 50 milligrams and 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

Two other motorists, both novice drivers, had their licences suspended for 72 hours after testing positive for cannabis on approved drug screening tests.

Other tickets included during the RIDE checks included driving while suspended, driving with alcohol or cannabis readily available and failing to surrender a driver’s licence.

Increased RIDE spot checks will continue throughout the holiday season.
