Guelph police say a stolen motor vehicle was recovered Friday evening, two hours after taking off on police when they tried to stop it.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Friday an officer was operating a marked cruiser on Speedvale Avenue West at Dawson Road and noticed the occupants of another motor vehicle looking at him. The officer recognized the driver and knew him to be a prohibited driver.

When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver quickly accelerated away, using the centre turn lane to pass other vehicles at a high rate of speed. In the interest of public safety the officer did not pursue the vehicle.

Approximately 8:20 p.m. officers located the vehicle on Niska Road just outside the city. The owner of the vehicle advised a male known to him had removed the keys from the owner’s home and taken the vehicle without permission.

Attempts to locate the driver are ongoing.
