Theft, assault charges after clerk allegedly punched in throat

Assault occurred after the man was reportedly unable to pay for three bags of chips

Saturday morning around 9:20 a.m., a man attended a closed store located just outside the downtown core of the City of Guelph. He forcefully opened the front doors and proceeded to take three bottles of alcohol valued at $55.90 plus tax.

At 11:25 a.m., the man attended a downtown restaurant. He attempted to purchase four small bags of chips. When he was unable to pay, he allegedly proceeded to punch an adult employee twice in the throat, took the chips and left the restaurant.

Shortly after, police located the male out front of the restaurant and he was arrested.

He was charged with:

- Break, enter and commit indictable offence

- Assault

- Theft under $5,000

- Being intoxicated in a public place

He will appear in court Oct. 7.

Police report the restaurant employee was not injured.
