Three motorists were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend, including one who had his wife and child in the vehicle.

Friday evening, just after 9 p.m., police received information about a possible impaired driver in the area of Speedvale Avenue West and Kathleen Street. Officers located the vehicle backed into a driveway, and noted it appeared to have collided with a retaining wall and had fresh damage.

Officers spoke to a man who admitted he had been driving and noted obvious signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. The 52-year-old driver was arrested.

Approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, police were called by an on-duty firefighter who had come across a collision at Arthur Street South and Elizabeth Street. A car had mounted the curb, damaging the front wheel and bumper. The driver, a 36-year-old Guelph man, was showing signs of impairment and was arrested. Testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

At 11:20 p.m. Saturday, an officer was on patrol on Wellington Street West when a vehicle passed at a high rate of speed, measured at 93 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, who had his wife and small child in the vehicle, had an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

The driver failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. The 38-year-old man is charged with impaired driving and speeding.

All three motorists had their driver’s licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. They were all released with April court dates.
