Insecure load strikes passing car

On Wednesday, Apr. 19, 2017 at approximately 11:28 a.m., a flatbed tractor trailer unit loaded with what appeared to be steel truck frames was travelling southbound on Victoria Road North (north of Speedvale Avenue).  The truck was operated by a 43-year-old Grand Valley male.

At that time, one of the steel truck frames became insecure and fell from the truck into the northbound passing lane and into the path of a northbound Pontiac operated by a 32-year-old Mount Forest woman. She was accompanied by a small female child.

The Pontiac driver applied her brakes and skidded to a stop but not before making contact with the steel frame causing minor damage to her vehicle. Neither the driver nor her child sustained injuries in the collision.

Members of the Guelph Police Traffic Unit contacted the Ministry of Transportation and 2 Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene.

The involved company and the driver of the commercial motor vehicle were charged with Insecure Load – Commercial Motor Vehicle.

Copper targeted in two break-ins

Sometime overnight on Apr. 19, 2017 a Maple Street and a Victoria Road business were targeted for the copper wires at both locations. Copper is a much sought after metal for thieves who are able to sell the wire as scrap.

In both of these locations it appears that the unknown suspects were interrupted by staff responding to the sites after an alarm had gone off.  At one site, all of the copper was recovered in another location on the premise and at the second, thieves made off with approximately $1,000 worth of wire.
