Police investigate after Uber driver spit on

The following news releases were issued today by the Guelph Police Service:

Assault investigation
The Guelph Police are currently investigating an assault that occurred on July 1, 2020 at approximately 10:45 p.m. Police received a 911 call from an Uber driver who was working in that capacity with a male passenger in the rear seat. Through investigation it was determined that the Uber driver was spit on by the passenger following a verbal altercation. This act constitutes an assault under the Criminal Code and the investigation is ongoing.

Numerous fireworks related fires
The Guelph Police along with Guelph Fire Department attended to numerous reports of fire in several different locations on the evening of July 1, 2020. The Guelph Police are fully supportive of Canada Day celebrations with fireworks, however the safety of our residents and their property is paramount. Fireworks were responsible for numerous small fires that could have been far more serious in nature. No one was injured in any of the fires.

Guelph Police would like to remind residents that fireworks are an explosive/flammable device that can cause injury to persons and damage to property. Careful, safe and responsible use are the key to a great celebration for our country. Happy Canada Day!

In Guelph, fireworks displays are permitted on:
    •    The day before and the day of Victoria Day
    •    The day before and day of Canada Day (July 1)
    •    Diwali (either October or November depending on cycle of the moon)
    •    Other religious events approved by the Guelph Fire Department
    •    As permitted by the Guelph Fire Chief

Fireworks safety:
    •    Store fireworks in cool, dry place
    •    Only use fireworks outdoors, in open areas away from buildings, dry grass, and trees
    •    Do not use fireworks in high winds
    •    Keep the audience at least 12.1m (40 feet) away from the discharging area
    •    Keep an extinguisher or water nearby (garden hose or bucket)
    •    Light one firework at a time
    •    Get permission from the city before discharging fireworks on city property (parks)
    •    Put used or extinguished fireworks in a bucket of water immediately after use. Soak them overnight, drain the water and put the used fireworks in the garbage
    •    Keep pets safe indoors during fireworks
