Two motorists face steep penalties after being charged Thursday with passing stopped school buses.

A Guelph police officer was conducting proactive enforcement Thursday afternoon in the area of Stevenson Street North and Speedvale Avenue East. Police have received several complaints this week of drivers not stopping for school buses with their overhead lights flashing, since students returned to in-person learning on Monday.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, drivers who pass stopped school buses with their overhead lights activated face a minimum fine of $400 and six demerit points for a first offence, and a minimum fine of $1,000, six demerit points and up to six months in jail for subsequent offences.
