Two males were arrested for impaired driving over the weekend, including one who failed to provide a proper breath sample even after being given eight opportunities to do so, police say.

Just before 10 p.m. Saturday, Guelph police received a report of a vehicle driving erratically in the area of Waterloo Avenue and Wellington Street West. Officers located the vehicle pulled over in a parking lot and spoke to the driver, who exited the vehicle and was very unsteady on his feet and had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

The male registered a fail on a roadside screening device and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed he had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system. A 63-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Nov. 23.

Approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Guelph police officers were on patrol and observed a pickup truck driving over a curb while leaving a licensed establishment on Silvercreek Parkway South. Officers followed the truck for a short distance before pulling it over. A can of beer was observed in the cup holder.

The driver was asked to provide a breath sample into a roadside screening device, however several times failed to provide a suitable sample by either not breathing out at all or stopping before the device obtained a suitable sample. A 37-year-old Cambridge male is charged with failing to comply with a breath demand. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court Dec. 21.
