UPDATE: SIU say man, 44, was shot by Guelph police officer

Man sustained injuries in an incident after police initially tweeted that the intersection of Paisley/Silvercreek was closed for an investigation

UPDATE: 9:00 P.M. Police have reopened Silvercreek Parkway North and Paisley Road following the earlier investigation.

UPDATE: 7:30 P.M.  The SIU says a 44-year-old man was shot by a police officer and that he was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate an incident that involved a firearm being discharged and a man sustaining injuries Sunday afternoon.

Police report that approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday Guelph police responded to a suspicious vehicle call at Silvercreek Parkway North and Paisley Road.

"Officers arrived on scene and became involved in an interaction with a male. During the interaction, a firearm was discharged and the male sustained injuries requiring notification of the SIU. The male has been transferred to hospital for treatment in stable condition," read a police press release.

The SIU has been notified and has invoked its mandate.

Police will not be providing further information as the SIU does its investigation.
