A 29-year-old Guelph man faces a pair of firearm charges after police noticed what appeared to be a handgun handle sticking out of the pocket of his hoodie.

Police responded to a Wyndham Street North business shortly before 11 p.m.on Tuesday after being called about an unwanted person, explains a Guelph Police news release. When they arrived, officers found a male sitting on the ground.

The handle of what turned out to be a “very realistic” BB gun was observed as the man stood up, though officers were unsure of its authenticity at the time and advised the man to keep his hands out of the pocket.

During an investigation, the man told police he began carrying the replica gun to protect himself after having his cellphone stolen.

Two charges were laid – carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
