Weapon and drug charges stem from RIDE check

Police say driver told them he needed the machete for protection

A Hamilton male faces weapons and drug charges after being stopped at a RIDE spot check in Guelph Saturday night.

Guelph police were conducting a RIDE program on Wellington Street East near Neeve Street when they stopped a motor vehicle approximately 10:40 p.m. A long machete-style knife was observed to the left of the driver’s seat, which the driver advised he needed for protection. A strong odour of cannabis was also detected inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed 45 grams of cannabis as well as numerous empty baggies.

A 40-year-old Hamilton male is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling and driving a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available. He will appear in a Guelph court Feb. 8.
