A shoplifting arrest Tuesday led to assault and weapons charges against a Guelph couple.
Approximately 5:37 p.m., Guelph police were on patrol on Silvercreek Parkway North when they spotted a woman wanted in relation to a theft last month.
Officers approached the woman and a male companion and advised the woman she was under arrest on the warrant. During a search incident to arrest officers located a can of bear spray in the woman's purse.
Her companion was advised to leave the area, but instead became agitated. As the woman was being led towards a cruiser, the man kicked the vehicle’s passenger door causing approximately $2,000 in damage.
The man was arrested and attempted to punch one of the officers before being detained.
A 34-year-old Guelph woman is charged with possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing a weapon contrary to an order and breach of probation. A 54-year-old Guelph man is charged with mischief under $5,000 and assault police. Both will appear in a Guelph court May 27.
