CENTRE WELLINGTON - The decision on whether council will endorse the proposed speed limit policy and technical approach or not will be made at Monday's meeting.

A report was submitted and reviewed by council this past September that outlined a process and work plan for developing a speed limit policy and technical approach for reviewing speed limits, assessing speeding concerns, and implementing effective speed reduction measures in urban and rural areas.

On Monday, Adam Gilmore, manager of engineering for the township, will be presenting the proposed policy report to council.

“In developing Centre Wellington's speed limit policy and technical approach, township staff have considered Wellington County's draft speed management guidelines and largely built on this framework to develop a policy that considers some of the unique differences associated with the township road network,” the report stated.

The proposed policy and approach includes the following three key steps:

  1. Review current speed limits;
  2. Identify and confirm areas where speeding is occurring;
  3. Apply effective speed reduction measures to improve safety.

If council decided to endorse the proposed policy and technical approach, township staff’s next step will be completing a review of current speed limits in high-priority areas and report back to council in the winter of 2022 to present the results of the review and any recommended speed limit reductions.

Next, staff will continue with the complete assessment of all township roads, with the findings informing the development of a consolidated speed bylaw to be presented to the council in the spring of 2022.
