PALMERSTON – Minto council approved site plan application for the expansion project of the Palmerston arena and ball field upgrades.

At Tuesday’s virtual meeting, council unanimously approved the site plan application which consists of the renovation of existing, and construction of additional, arena dressing rooms; the upgrade of the LED lighting at the ball diamond; and the creation of a third baseball diamond with backstop fencing and stone dust.

Domm Construction Ltd. was contracted to do the work in December 2021 for the total amount of $2,034,589.00 plus tax, which falls below the initial project budget of $2.1 million.

Council received a grant of $1.7 million from the federal and provincial Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Work on the new diamond had already begun last fall to create an opportunity for it to be playable in 2022. Locates were secured to allow for excavation of the infield area and installation of poles for the backstop fence in November.

The application has been reviewed by the County of Wellington’s planning department, town staff, and the Town of Minto’s engineering firm, Triton Engineering Services Limited. It has also been circulated to Maitland Valley Conservation Authority and Wellington Source Water Protection and no additional comments or concerns were received.

Ashley Sawyer, town’s planning technician, noted the proposal complies within the applicable zoning regulations and standards, and items that staff had concerns with have been addressed during the review process.

Council had no other comments or concerns with the application during the meeting.

Construction is set to begin this week.
