TEVIOTDALE – A new mural celebrating Teviotdale's history is coming to the parking lot of a local restaurant this spring.
Approved during a Minto council meeting Tuesday evening, staff said the project was originally brought forward to council last year by a group of residents interested in researching and creating a public display celebrating Teviotdale's history.
Featuring six panels with local historical landmarks ranging from 1854-1965, the mural will include photos of the Teviotdale Post Office at Millers Corners, the Dance Hall in the southwest corner, the Speedway in the northwest corner and the old Community Centre.
As Teviotdale doesn't have a park, the mural will be installed on the southwest side of the parking lot of the Teviotdale Truck Stop and will be set far back from the roundabout so as not to cause a visual distraction to drivers.
"Public art is an important element throughout Minto and adds to the quality of place in a community," said staff in the report. "This is an opportunity to install a historical marker in a more rural part of the municipality ... (and) will provide an attraction for customers of the restaurant and the numerous passersby."
Staff said the mural should be installed in late May and will be accompanied by an unveiling ceremony.
