Steve Liebig, second runner-up for the 2018 Ward 3 municipal elections, accepted the vacant councillor position for Ward 3.

GUELPH/ERAMOSA - The new Ward 3 councillor for the Township of Guelph/Eramosa, Steve Liebig, was officially sworn in Monday.

At the beginning of the council meeting on Monday, Coun. Steve Liebig was sworn in as the Ward 3 councillor for the township. He was recommended by council to fill in Coun. Louise Marshall’s position.

Township lawyer, Scott Galajda, recited the oath to Liebig during the meeting.

“It’s just a humbling experience to be here with everybody and to get a chance to work with you guys. It’s beyond words what I can say. The first thing that pops in my head is ‘cool.' Thanks very much and I look forward to working with the council,” said Liebig during the meeting.

Liebig, 53, ran for the first time for the 2010 Ward 4 municipal elections with 359 votes. He lost to John Scott who had 443 votes. He ran once again for the 2018 Ward 3 municipal elections and gained 556 votes, while Marshall had 711 votes.

Mayor Chris White thanked him for accepting and is eager to be working with Liebig.

“Louise and I got elected at the same time in 2014 and she’s a fantastic councillor and she’s going to be missed. You’ve got some pretty big shoes to fill but Steve is up to the task,” said Coun. Mark Bouwmeester.
