FERGUS - The Grove Hubs, safe spaces for local youth, is hosting a workshop titled, “How to Have Difficult Conversations In A Real Way.”
On Nov. 23, The Grove invites parents, caregivers, mentors, or concerned community members in Guelph and Wellington County to The Grove – Fergus to have an intimate conversation and learning surrounding topics such as grief, suicide, divorce, drugs, sex trafficking, bullying and more.
Prior to COVID-19, it is estimated that one out of five youth suffered from mental health illnesses or substance abuse in Guelph and Wellington County.
Due to COVID-19, that estimate has increased to four out of five youth – emphasizing the need for parents to get involved.
“It’s been a difficult fall for the Fergus community, particularly for our youth. Coupled with the continued uncertainty of the pandemic, we need to do all we can to offer support as parents, caregivers and the greater community — and that starts with sharing of information,” said Molly Handsaeme, Youth Outreach Worker with The Grove, in a press release.
The workshop will focus on a collaborative approach into developing strategies for navigating, starting, and continuing conversations around these important topics among the youth in Wellington County.
It will be hosted by Fergus-based Barbara Lustgarten Evoy, a trusted source in topics of family wellness. She is an author, experienced educator, current UGDSB Trustee for Centre Wellington, professional mediator, and host of TV’s Parenting With Barbara.
Located at 900 Tower Street South in Fergus, the event will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will be free of charge.
