GuelphToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Barb McPhee, who talks about food insecurity in the community and how the community can help:

Food insecurity In our city has been a real concern for many years and even more since this change of life Pandemic for many community members and organizations trying to provide food services.

The North End Harvest Market (NEHM) which gives fresh produce free to low income and struggling families and individuals has tripled the amount of Guelph and Area community members that they are supporting in order to put some fresh produce on their tables.

Although the need grows and the dollars to support the growth do not - not only at the market, but in all of our emergency food services it is getting more difficult to keep up the pace.

So the North End Harvest Market has decided this year to change April 1, 2021 from April Fool’s Day to April Food Day. We are requesting that instead of trying to fool someone, you feed someone.

The North End Harvest Market is a program of the Guelph Neigbourhood Support Coalition (GNSC) – so to make a donation to the Market or any of the small food pantries of the GNSC, here are some options.

  • You can write a cheque made out to the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition with a note in the tag line of where to direct the dollars. Cheques can be dropped off at the market at 140 Waverley Drive - Portable # 6 or mailed to 42 Carden St, Guelph, N1 3A2.
  • You can donate on-line by visiting https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/guelph-neighbourhood-support-coalition/ You will see a drop down menu and a comment box to direct your donation. You will receive and electronic tax receipt from Canada helps
  • You can also send an e-transfer to [email protected] With a note of where you would like to direct the donation. Please use (gnscdonation)as the password for your donation. Tax receipts for donations of $25.00 or more can be issued.

So when April 1, 2021 comes around, don’t be a fooler, be a feeder.

Thanks for being a Caring Community
